How Partitioning India and Pakistan Mentally Destabilized The Whole Subcontinent
"How could they be in India a short while ago and now suddenly in Pakistan?"
Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story Toba Tek Singhaptly captured the frenzied religious dilemma that engulfed the 1947 Partition of India.
This madness even trickled into the mental asylums of the divided subcontinent.
Dr. Robert Brocklesby Davis, a psychiatrist at Ranchi’s Psychiatric Nursing Hospital, diagnosed a Bengali Hindu man with hyper-religiosity in 1949.
The patient had inappropriate dreams about Hindu deities and so, frightened, he converted his name, dress, and language to Islam.
However, soon, he dreamt that he was assaulting Muslim Imams. Terrified, he changed his religion to Christianity, got dressed in a suit, and started speaking English.
Yet, he soon dreamt that he had “impure thoughts” about the Virgin Mary and he broke down completely.
