In a recent interview, former first lady Michelle Obama had opened up about depression and how she had struggled with low-grade depression during the Covid-19 pandemic. She also spoke about the challenges of 2020, thus inspiring Americans to speak more openly about their mental health.

Michelle Obama quoted depression as a normal or expected mental health condition during such difficult times. “To think that somehow that we can just continue to rise above all the shock and the trauma and the upheaval that we have been experiencing without feeling it in that way is just unrealistic” she said in her recent interview. She urges individuals to speak up more about mental health, as everyone in today’s world has to deal with trauma, anxiety, and difficulties in different ways.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the economic fallout had resulted in a mental health crisis across the globe, not just the US. According to a survey conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in August, nearly 41% of respondents reported mental health concerns arising from the pandemic. Approximately 1 in 3 Americans had reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression. However, she had also said that the quarantine had enabled her to strengthen her relationship with her daughters. She also encourages everyone to get vaccinated to protect themselves against COVID-19.
