What Is Mania?

Mania is a mental health condition characterized by a significant shift in a person’s mood and energy levels. It is typically associated with an elevated or irritable mood and increased levels of activity or energy with a high level of racing thoughts that get quickly shifted from one idea to another.

Mania is a symptom of bipolar disorder and can cause significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. In some cases, it may also be accompanied by psychotic symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations.

During a manic episode, a person may experience:

  • Feeling euphoric or extremely happy
  • Having a lot of energy and feeling highly productive
  • Flight of ideas and racing of thoughts
  • Engaging in impulsive or risky behaviors, such as excessive spending or substance abuse, unsafe sexual engagement
  • Feeling easily annoyed or frustrated, or being aggressive
  • A decreased need for sleep

Disclaimer: If these symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning, and last for at least 1 week or longer, it might be considered a disorder.
