What Is Stress?

Stress is a physical, mental, and emotional response to a challenging situation or event. It is the body’s way of reacting to a perceived threat or demand. Stress can be triggered by a variety of situations, such as work-related pressures, relationship problems, financial difficulties, or even a physical illness.

When someone experiences stress, their body releases a complex mix of hormones and chemicals, such as adrenaline and cortisol, that prepare them to fight or flee from the perceived threat. If stress is prolonged or chronic, it can negatively affect an individual’s physical and mental health, including fatigue, anxiety, depression, and a weakened immune system.

Stress can manifest in a variety of symptoms, such as:
