The annual “Out Of The Darkness” community walk, held on the Rock Valley College campus, educates people about suicide and mental health awareness in Rockford. This year, approximately 200 participants gathered to pay tribute to their loved ones who fell victim to suicide.

For Lillie Doss, the word “suicide” entered her world at a young age when her father tragically took his own life. Now, nine years later, she walks in his memory, recognizing that many others face similar challenges.

“I was ten when my dad passed, so I didn’t quite understand. I think that is another important part that needs more education, especially for younger people. They do not know what signs to look for, so it’s our job to prevent that and let them know what you can look for,” said Doss.

Others joined the walk to remember loved ones who grappled with mental health issues. Some now participate as mental health advocates, like Abby Arellano, who never knew her uncle was battling mental health challenges.

“It took a while for us to realize that was his choice and not that we’re okay with it, but we have to understand where he was coming from. That’s not anything we can ever understand where he was at in that mental space,” shared Arellano.

Proceeds from The Out Of The Darkness Community Walk support the vital services offered by the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.

“Just by coming together as a community, they are trying to bring suicide out of the darkness,” noted Steve Moore, from the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.
