Researchers at the National Cancer Institute, in the US, revealed how certain leisure activities reduce the risk of early death in older adults. The study is published in the journal JAMA Network Open.

The Study

The researchers surveyed data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. They studied 272,550 adults, aged 59–82 years, and their exercise and recreational activities. These included running, cycling, swimming, golf, walking, and other aerobic exercises that were linked to lowered death risk.

The Findings

The results revealed the link between certain leisure activities and longevity. It was seen that leisure time activities like racquet sports or those that require moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity are significantly associated with a lower risk of death, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
