Can Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Help Treat Anxiety Disorders? Study Finds

A team of researchers at Georgetown University, Washington, explored the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in treating anxiety disorders. The study is published in the JAMA Psychiatry.

The Study

276 participants with anxiety disorders were randomly assigned 8 weeks of the weekly mindfulness-based stress reduction program or the antidepressant escitalopram course. Then, their anxiety levels were assessed with the Clinical Global Impression of Severity scale (CGI-S).

The Findings

The results revealed that mindfulness-based stress reduction intervention for the treatment of anxiety disorders is non-inferior to pharmacotherapy.

The authors remarked: “Our study provides evidence for clinicians, insurers, and health care systems to recommend, include, and provide reimbursement for mindfulness-based stress reduction [in treatment for anxiety disorders].
