Researchers at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) explored the link between inadequate sleep and heart disease. The study was presented at the ESC Congress of 2022.

The Study

In order to understand how sleep deprivation increases stroke risk and chances of cardiovascular conditions, the researchers studied 7,200 participants from the biobank the Paris Prospective Study III (PPP3).

The participants underwent a physical examination. They also completed questionnaires on lifestyle, personal and family medical history, and medical conditions.

The research team then assessed the association between certain sleeping habits, the quantity and quality of sleep, and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

The Findings

The results revealed how a good night’s sleep affects your health. Adequate and good-quality sleep lowers the risk of heart disease—so much so that cardiovascular events could be prevented with healthier sleep. In fact, it was observed that good sleepers enjoy reduced risks of coronary heart disease or stroke.

One of the lead researchers, Dr. Nambiema, said: “Our study illustrates the potential for sleeping well to preserve heart health and suggests that improving sleep is linked with lower risks of coronary heart disease and stroke. Given that cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death worldwide, greater awareness is needed on the importance of good sleep for maintaining a healthy heart.
