A team of researchers at MacEwan University explored how psychological flexibility is associated with less materialistic attachment. The study is published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

Understanding Psychological Flexibility

“Psychologically flexible” means the ability to respond flexibly to psychological events.

The Study

The researchers recruited over 600 students attending university as participants. They completed assessments about psychological flexibility and materialistic attachment and non-attachment.

The Findings

The results revealed that mentally flexible individuals tend to be less attached to materialistic objects and experiences. This approach drives their motivation for non-material purchases.

The authors added: “[This study provides] new evidence for the relevance of psychological flexibility/inflexibility in predicting people’s tendency toward materialism, material versus experimental buying, and autonomous versus non-autonomous reasons for experimental buying.
