Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine provided interesting insights into how we make conscious and unconscious decisions. The study is published in the journal Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology.

The Theory

The research team developed a new theory of consciousness. This theory delved into how the brain structures support memory and make decisions around free will and moral responsibility.

The researchers stated that “the consciousness developed as a memory system that is used by the unconscious brain to help [humans] flexibly and creatively imagine the future and plan accordingly.” That’s why our decisions are made unconsciously even before we are making conscious decisions.

Consciousness And Mental Disorders

The researchers also examined several neurologic, psychiatric, and developmental disorders from the perspective of this new theory of consciousness. These include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, dissociative identity disorder, autism, delirium, migraine, and schizophrenia.

They also created a roadmap to guide clinicians, educators, and individuals in gaining and dispersing knowledge about the conscious mind and the unconscious brain.
