Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center claimed that counting steps reduces the risk of chronic diseases. The study is published in the journal Nature Medicine.

The Study

The researchers surveyed data drawn from commercial wearable activity trackers and health monitors in the electronic health record (EHR). This contained information of over four years of activity and health data from more than 6,000 participants in the federal All of Us research program.

All the participants wore Fitbit activity trackers at least 10 hours a day and had provided access to their EHRs.

The Findings

The results revealed that developing a habit of step counts could reduce disease risks. Taking more than 8,200 steps per day was found to protect against obesity, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and major depressive disorder.
